Truth and Postmodernism

Been reading some recent Blogs on postmodernism. Most notably the A-Team, run by a good guy who has the humility to see himself as Murdock and not Mr. T.

He enjoys my old nemesis Mr. John White and asked me to review his 45 minute lecture on The Emergent Church...which I just did.

White makes some good points to be sure and it's worth listening to.

I do, as usual, feel like White is creating a controversy where none really exists.

I think if McClaren and White were to sit down (which White would not do in my experience, because if you do not agree with him he will not "break bread" with you...I assure you this is true. I tried to buy him sushi once) they would probably find that they agreed on what C.S. Lewis called "Mere Christianity".

Which ultimately is the point if I can cut to the chase.

White defends his Modernist/Rationalism as rabidly as his Chrsitianity. I agree with the later, the former is just dross.

I guess it is the same thing that makes him defend his Cavinism as staunchly as the very biblical record themselves. What is up with that? What of the 1500 years prior? What of Irenaeus, Papius, Athanasius, etc....? Out of the loop because Calvin had not show up with a flower?

Here is the core...TRUTH.

That is the drum that White bangs again and again. That and the "offense" of the Gospel.

Well Mr. White, the offense is not against Calvin and he would be sore over your suggesting it so.

The offense is simply "The Cross". It is a scandal. The scandal of love and of truth.

Pre-Modern, Modern, Postmodern.

Defying your branded christianity is no scandal.

Nope. Only the Cross and the love of God shown there.

Show me where modernistic propositional truth is the way into heaven via scripture and I will show you where living faith, trust and hope in the Living One is superior.

Experience that Mr. White.

i love cs lewis. he was so ahead of his time! i forget sometimes how much i appreciate his writing, lectures and ideas. until i hear them again and then i remember how brilliant he is. i love his imagery in "mere christianity" of all religions being like rooms in a house . . . i need to go back and read that again.

it is really true that we need to separate our religion from our culture. so many people have culture and tradition tied into their religion that if those things get challenged or stripped away (for example, when gallileo said that the earth was not the center of the universe) they feel as if their religion itself is being challenged and attacked. learn to make a separation! i hope your faith can transcend time and culture and your present day environment.

Tabs- Yes Lewis continues to be very relevant. His concept of "Mere Christianity" helps us get past all the crap and additions.

I like your example and it is also why I find it worrisome when people tie their faith directly to right-wing politics (or left...though those on the left seem to be more concerned with serving). People ends up rejecting a loving God because all these other agendas have been added. Yikes!
